There have been many exciting and innovative developments over the past decade that allow us to better meet the fertility needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Not only has the concept of “family” evolved to include unmarried, single parents, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender singles or couples, but the technologies at our disposal in our San Diego fertility center are vast.
We are conveniently located in the San Diego area, but we know that fertility tourism to the state of California can be arduous and an initial consultation can be daunting. However, we also know that the doctors at our clinic can help you receive the best treatments possible with the highest level of care. Below are some treatment options our fertility specialists are able to provide our LGBTQ+ parents-to-be.
Gay Family Building
Gay men have the full range of Gen5 Assisted Reproductive Technology (“ART”) available to them, including options for egg or embryo donation combined with gestational surrogacy. For individuals where both are facing infertility, or if infertility is a concern as you plan for children down the road, you are able to use sperm freezing.
For gestational surrogacy, men will have donor eggs fertilized with their sperm or entire donor embryos in their fertility plans. This will utilize IVF, or in vitro fertilization, and the surrogate will carry the pregnancy. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate’s eggs aren’t used – you’ll participate in the egg freezing process – so the carrier does not have a genetic relationship with the baby.
Split Insemination
While it’s only possible to use the sperm from one man to fertilize any given egg, a popular option for some gay couples is “split insemination,” in which half of the eggs are fertilized with one man’s sperm and the other half are fertilized with the other man’s sperm. If you are interested in this procedure, in the initial consult and throughout the process, our experienced team can help you. You can understand all of the considerations involved – time, energy, financial, legal, and administrative – to make the best choice for your family.
We take very serious and strict measures in vetting our surrogacy candidates so that we can ensure the health of the baby and have a success guarantee program for your family building. Although treatment for infertility can be difficult, ensuring a successful pregnancy through a surrogate can be easy.
Co-IVF for Couples
Co-in vitro fertilization (Co-IVF) or reciprocal IVF treatment is an exciting fertility treatment available to same-sex female couples, or any two people who both possess a uterus. This procedure gives each partner the opportunity to physically participate in the reproductive process.
One partner provides the eggs for the embryos. The other partner carries the embryos during an IVF cycle. Co-IVF provides choices for eligible couples that best fits each partner’s preferred role as a parent (i.e. genetic contribution versus carrying and delivering the pregnancy.) We can help you understand the options available to each partner in this process.
Lesbian Family Building
Lesbian women have several options for starting or growing their families. Individuals and couples can choose Ovulation Induction, to stimulate ovulation for higher success rates – especially for those who have irregular cycles. They can participate in intrauterine insemination (IUI), also known as “artificial insemination,” or in vitro fertilization (IVF), using an anonymous or known sperm donor.
IVF treatment is also a good option for women who may be experiencing problems conceiving through insemination. For in vitro fertilization, the individual will receive an embryo transfer. Whether an embryo uses an egg donation or the couple’s own eggs, this process allows a larger opportunity for a successful pregnancy.

Our nurse practitioners and doctors at this San Diego facility center are dedicated to providing compassionate care through these treatments. From the first visit, each fertility doctor works closely with individuals to create their fertility plan and ensure the treatment plan, whether IVF or IUI, is as thorough and effective as possible.
Trans Family Building
We are proud to offer fertility preservation and family-building assisted reproductive treatment to trans individuals and couples, both pre-and post-transition. Treatments allowing egg freezing, sperm freezing, or embryo freezing prior to hormone therapy or surgery make the opportunity to participate in the genetic makeup of any planned future baby.
While some transgender patients may be able to conceive on their own, some may need the help of assisted reproductive technology to become pregnant. Individuals who have reproductive partners can still benefit from compassionate care and treatment plans. Treatment options include in vitro fertilization (which may include donor egg, sperm, or embryo), intrauterine insemination (which may include donor sperm), or gestational surrogacy.
Be sure that you discuss your hormone therapy with your Gen5 doctor. Your doctor will advise whether you need to postpone hormone therapy during fertility treatment. We will help you minimize the time you need to be off hormone therapy.
